If you haven't read this one, Tan's collection of essays, which spans her extremely prolific literary life, is so worth it! The depth & breadth of this beautiful collection, which comes from the author of The Joy Luck Club & The Kitchen God's Wife (among others), is quite remarkable. Tan has a way of juxtaposing real life with both her personal struggles and her literary ideas, which makes everything in this crazy world sort of make sense.

As she says in one of her essays included in the book, "As a storyteller, I know that if I don't like the ending, I can write a better one." Tan knows she's just a storyteller, but also conveys the message that we all have a certain power over our lives, which she dubs, "The opposite of fate."
