It was awful trying to get the kids together for practice, which was scheduled twice a week, for one hour each day.
Out of 12 boys, we had about 3-4 that usually arrived on time. Everyone else would join in later - sometimes even a half-hour after practice had started. What the hell did they think the kids would get out of it?
On game days, we'd ask the kids to arrive 45 minutes before first pitch to warm up and the line-up turned in.
We'd STILL have kids arrive five minutes after the game had started.
So can you imagine what it was like trying to pull of the end-of-season party?
But this was for the kids, for those boys (most of 'em) who worked hard all season. And Hubz wanted to do something for 'em.
Heard about Baseball Buddies, where the lil' guys get a taste of the majors. They get their names called out, and get to take the field with the baseball player who plays the same spot. It was SO cute to see them all standing out there, holding their caps on their chests during the National Anthem Ceremony.
Of course, just before the game started, we had our own little ceremony. An Awards Ceremony. Hubz ordered trophies with each of their names, and gave props in his little speech to each of the kids and the parents who helped out. Ah - it warmed my heart to see these guys go up there to accept their trophies, with even their noses beaming with pride.
But we all got a bit of eye candy before calling it a night. We couldn't wait for the fireworks to start. :)
So with the trophies, and the cost to participate in the Baseball Buddies program, Hubz and I shelled out over $500 for this shindig. Trophies were on him, but everyone else was responsible for their party for the baseball buddies program.
We sent out an Evite, and took RSVP's for how many adults/children per party. But a couple of the kids didn't show, and one of the parents said they didn't need tickets - "they get in free all the time." (Would've been nice if you TOLD us that so we wouldn't have bought your tickets!)
So MY question for YOU is:
What would you do with the unclaimed tickets and leftover trophies???
Do you try to get payment anyway for the tickets? Or do you just eat the cost for the tickets and mail/deliver the trophies for those who didn't show up?
I hate it when the kids luck out because of their parents, so personally, I'd still like to get them their trophies. Even if.
We're thinking of sending the trophies with the damn tickets. Hint, hint. C'mon now - we still have SIX friggin' trophies sitting here - aargghhhh....
